About This Series
The acute housing supply shortage of almost 4 million units in the United States demands urgent action. Barriers to increasing housing supply exist across multiple sectors, including finance, construction, land use regulations, infrastructure and workforce. In this series of fact sheets, NLC offers context, solutions and case studies for city leaders seeking to address these barriers and create more housing more efficiently and at lower costs.
The Housing Supply Accelerator Fact Sheet Series explores solutions in three critical areas:
- Construction and Development: These fact sheets cover strategies aimed at reducing the plan development timeline, enabling scalable development, and implementing alternative construction methods to facilitate housing production.
- Land Use and Regulations: These fact sheets will focus on strategies for cities to simplify land use regulations, streamline the permitting process, and utilize regulations to shape a holistic vision for their communities.
- Finance: These fact sheets will expand on ways cities can establish public-private partnerships for housing production and preservation. It will discuss these partnerships not only as a means to fund housing but also as a strategy to share resources, align efforts, and tackle housing issues in an interdisciplinary manner.

About the Housing Supply Accelerator
A partnership between the National League of Cities (NLC) and the American Planning Association (APA), the Housing Supply Accelerator was created to help communities tackle their local housing challenges. Through this national campaign, NLC and APA are narrowly focused on identifying locally driven housing supply solutions that expand, preserve and improve the quantity and quality of housing.
