Washington, D.C. — National League of Cities (NLC) President Kevin Kramer, Councilmember from Louisville, Ky., issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation to reauthorize and strengthen the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet):
“I applaud the House for passing bipartisan legislation to reauthorize and strengthen the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet). This progress was made possible through the leadership of the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Neal Dunn and Rep. Jennifer L. McClellan. Their commitment to ensuring that all local first responders have access to reliable, interoperable broadband communications helps protect our residents and communities.
“FirstNet plays a critical role in supporting police, fire and emergency medical services by providing a dedicated, resilient communications network during emergencies and disasters. Reauthorization will sustain and enhance this capability, ensuring that local governments can continue to protect residents, coordinate response efforts and maintain situational awareness when it matters most.
“NLC supports this legislation and urges continued bipartisan collaboration as it moves through the legislative process. Strengthening FirstNet is a vital investment in public safety and in the communities that rely on these essential services every day.”
