Launched one year ago, The Housing Supply Accelerator Playbook: Solutions, Systems, Partnerships, a resource designed to support cities, towns and villages navigating their local housing supply challenges, has made its way to cities across the U.S. and beyond. To celebrate its first anniversary, this blog highlights key moments, measurable impacts and what’s next for the Housing Supply Accelerator.
The Housing Supply Accelerator Playbook in Action
Since its launch, the Housing Supply Accelerator Playbook has garnered more than 40,000 views and 10,000 downloads and has been highlighted at over 80 events and meetings across the United States.
On the ground, the playbook has inspired the Delaware Chapter of American Planning Association and City Management Association of Delaware to launch a statewide effort, Delaware Housing Supply Accelerator (PDF), to align housing goals across jurisdictions.
Similarly, in Colorado, the Metro Mayors Caucus and Civic Results launched the Future Housing Coalition to convene local elected officials, developers, planners and other industry leaders, fostering collaboration on complex local housing issues. Recently, the playbook contributed to the City of Dallas’ amendments to its international residential code to allow up to eight dwelling units in three-story buildings, thereby supporting increased housing availability and diversity.

“Every local leader in America recognizes that the housing supply crisis is one of the biggest issues communities are facing today. I am encouraged by the impacts the Housing Supply Accelerator Playbook and the America’s Housing Comeback advisory group bring to local leaders together with the private sector and the federal government to address this challenge and find promising practices and innovative solutions that work.”
— Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio & NLC President
What’s Next: Take the Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge!
To mark this one-year anniversary, National League of Cities and the American Planning Association are launching the Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge, a nationwide network designed to accelerate the implementation of proven and innovative housing strategies and expand the supply of housing in communities across the country.
Rooted in action and results, the challenge will support local leaders to put the Housing Supply Accelerator Playbook: Solutions, Systems, Partnerships into practice. Through the challenge, cities will have access to:
- Tools to identify needs, implement changes and evaluate your community’s impact
- Access to timely technical assistance and coaching by housing supply experts
- Information on local, regional and national grant opportunities
- National recognition from National League of Cities and the American Planning Association
“Unlocking real solutions with the partnership of planners, elected leaders, and the private sector has been at the heart of the Housing Supply Accelerator from the beginning, and this essential collaboration will be pivotal in helping communities and regions increase housing supply and affordability. We are excited and energized by the number of state and local conversations and coalitions being inspired by this partnership. As we move from providing ideas through the Playbook to supporting implementation through the Housing Supply Accelerator Challenge, planners and our partners are committed to using the Housing Supply Accelerator to turn possibility into progress and accelerate housing supply, delivering the solutions communities need.”
— Sue Schwartz, FAICP, President, American Planning Association
