Council on Youth, Education and Families

NLC's Council on Youth, Education and Families (YEF Council) guides and oversees the YEF Institute's work. The membership of this Council, unlike any other NLC committee or council, is composed of not only local elected officials, but also youth members and representatives from major national organizations concerned about children and families.

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean and Councilmember-at-Large Ronnie Steine to Co-Chair 2012 YEF Council
Mayor Dean and Councilmember Steine have made increasing high school graduation rates and preparing Nashville's youth for college and careers one of the city's top priorities.

Tribute to Dr. Peter Benson, President & CEO, Search Institute
The YEF Council joins the youth development field throughout America and across the globe in both celebrating the life and mourning the loss of Peter Benson.

The YEF Institute's launch in January 2000 was the culmination of extensive planning and development efforts by the YEF Council. Under the leadership of Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the founding YEF Council chair, the Council created and promoted the idea and mission of the YEF Institute and was instrumental in securing endorsement from NLC's Board of Directors. Youth and adults who are interested in becoming members can ask YEF Institute staff about vacancies, qualifications, and applications. Contact Sharie Wood at (202) 626-3087 or wood@nlc.org. The NLC President makes appointments annually.
