Problem: Avondale public schools were seeing high rates of chronic absenteeism pre-pandemic, impacting academic outcomes. These rates became even more concerning beginning in the 2020-21 school year, particularly for youth that were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.
Solution: The City of Avondale joined forces with nonprofit organizations Valley of the Sun United Way and Read On Avondale to address chronic absenteeism in their city. The City played a key role in dedicating resources to an attendance awareness campaign and ongoing efforts to increase student engagement and academic achievement.
Outcome: The city’s six school districts have seen a 50% increase in student attendance from the 2021-22 to 2022-23 school years.
