Firearm regulation in the United States is primarily enacted at the federal and state level and is subject to extensive state preemption. In most states, local governments are restricted from enacting their own firearm regulations, leaving municipalities with limited authority to tailor policies to local public safety needs. As a result, cities, towns and villages must largely adhere to statewide firearm regulations, even when local conditions and preferences may differ.
