Washington, D.C. – National League of Cities CEO & Executive Director, Clarence E. Anthony, released the following statement reflecting on the life of Rev. Jesse Jackson:
“I mourn the loss of Reverend Jesse Jackson, who devoted his life to civil justice, voting rights and opportunity for all. His vision of a better America and the deeply held belief that where you start the journey does not dictate where you will end up inspired people of all backgrounds across the globe.
In 1984, seeing him run for president and hearing his inspiring oratory, motivated a 24-year-old me to come home to run for mayor to improve the lives of an impoverished farming community – to make my community better. Rev. Jackson’s influence focused on lifting up everyone, affirming their dignity and ensuring they knew, ‘I am somebody.’ My heart goes out to the entire Jackson family, and I know that because of him, we will all keep hope alive. ”
