NLC Applauds the Re-Introduction of the Streamlining Federal Grants Act

Washington, D.C. – The National League of Cities (NLC) thanks Senator Gary Peters and Senator James Lankford for reintroducing the Streamlining Federal Grants Act, a bipartisan effort to make federal funding more accessible to local governments of all sizes.

“Federal grants have the power to transform communities, but too many – especially small and rural municipalities – struggle to overcome bureaucratic barriers,” said Clarence E. Anthony, National League of Cities CEO and Executive Director. “The Streamlining Federal Grants Act will make the federal grant system more efficient by reducing overly burdensome and duplicative processes across all federal agencies. The National League of Cities thanks Senators Peters and Lankford for their bipartisan leadership and ongoing commitment to reforming the federal grant system.”

The Streamlining Federal Grants Act is designed to make federal grants more accessible for communities of all sizes by:

  • Reducing complexity in the grant process, including requiring that notices be “written in plain English” so that non-grant writing professionals can understand and apply for federal grants.
  • Improving the quality and availability of training and technical assistance.
  • Identifying and addressing barriers that prevent smaller and underserved communities from participating in federal grant programs.

Supporting the Streamlining Federal Grants Act aligns with NLC’s goal to ensure that every city, town and village, regardless of size, can access the federal resources they need to build stronger, more resilient communities.

The legislation was originally introduced in the previous Congress, where it advanced with bipartisan support and passed out of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. NLC is committed to working with congressional partners to ensure this important bill reaches the President’s desk.
