The National League of Cities released the following statement in response to ongoing tension between local governments and ICE:
“As representatives of more than 19,000 cities, towns and villages across America, the National League of Cities is the nonpartisan voice of local government large and small, urban and rural, Republican, Democratic and Independent. What has happened in Minnesota in recent weeks is a tragedy. Regardless of our individual views on immigration, this tragic and unnecessary chaos must end.
NLC recognizes the difficult work that our local leaders, and specifically local law enforcement, encounter every day in cities, towns and villages across America. We encourage coordination and communication between federal immigration enforcement agencies and local leaders to ensure that actions are carried out responsibly, with clarity and respect for local roles, and dignity for residents. This includes the International Association of Chiefs of Police call for the White House to convene local, state and federal partners on this issue. It also means Congress must work to avoid a partial government shutdown to ensure stability for local governments.
Cities, towns and villages across America are working constructively with partners at every level to uphold the law, ensure public trust, and keep our communities safe.”
