Washington, D.C. – In response to the Senate considering including a preemption on artificial intelligence (AI) regulation in the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) bill, NLC voices our opposition:
“Local governments are eager to use the potential of AI to unlock efficiencies, improve services to residents and make better decisions. To do that, local leaders must retain authority to decide on behalf of their own communities the extent to which they embrace AI and the data centers that support them, particularly in the absence of a comprehensive federal regulatory framework.
“Federal infringement on state and local authority will only serve to leave communities and their residents without protection and will have a chilling effect on the willingness of communities to pilot and experiment with innovative uses of AI in government services.”
