Washington, D.C. – In response to the U.S. Senate voting to end the federal government shutdown and reaching a bipartisan compromise, the National League of Cities (NLC) President Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio, issued the following statement:
“Local leaders across the country have carried the burden of this historic shutdown, the longest in our nation’s history, with direct consequences for essential services, strained budgets and disrupted community programs. Last night’s vote brings long-overdue relief and restores critical momentum for the work ahead.
“We are especially grateful to the entire Senate and their staff for their tireless efforts to reach a resolution. Your commitment to restoring government operations is a vital step toward ensuring that federal decisions reflect and support the needs of cities, towns and villages nationwide. We urge the House to take immediate action.
“NLC stands ready to continue working alongside Congress and the Administration to strengthen the federal-local partnership and deliver for communities across America.”
