NLC President Mayor Steve Patterson Statement on Longest Federal Government Shutdown in U.S. History

November 6, 2025 - (1 min read)

Washington, D.C. – In response to the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history, which began on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the National League of Cities (NLC) President Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio, issued the following statement:

“The longest federal government shutdown in history is harming America’s cities, towns and villages. Congress and the Administration are failing the American people. Missed paychecks, delayed and reduced SNAP benefits that help 11 million households put food on American tables, and disruptions to air travel, which keep our economy running, are unacceptable. Congress and the Administration need to put aside politics, do their job to find a bipartisan compromise and fulfill their obligation to the American people today.”
