Washington, D.C. – In response to the continuing federal government shutdown that began on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the National League of Cities (NLC) President Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio, issued the following statement:

“Local leaders show up for their communities every day. The National League of Cities urges the President and Congress to fully engage in negotiations this week to advance a bipartisan deal to end this federal government shutdown and the harm inflicted on communities across the country. Over a month without a functioning federal government is unacceptable, and your leadership is required to end the shutdown and restore order in Washington.

“Local leaders are doing their part — now we need Washington to do theirs. Your leadership is essential to restore stability and keep America moving forward.”
