WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National League of Cities (NLC) announced the formation of a new Global Engagement Advisory Committee that brings over a dozen qualified NLC members from small, mid-sized and large communities to the table to provide guidance and inform the development of NLC’s international engagement strategy for the coming years.

“Local governments play an essential role in solving global challenges – from public health to community resilience to any other number of issues,” said Steve Patterson, NLC President and Mayor of Athens, Ohio. “By building relationships and sharing best practices across borders, city leaders are perfectly positioned to serve as leaders in global governance while having a tangible impact on their own communities. That’s why we’re so thrilled to launch this working group that will guide NLC’s approach to international engagement as it only grows more important.”

Over the next six months, the Committee will meet regularly to develop a robust international engagement strategy for the organization that will formally launch at NLC’s 2025 City Summit conference in Salt Lake City this November.

Participating members of the Global Engagement Advisory Committee include:

  • Steve Patterson, Mayor, Athens, Ohio; NLC President (Chair)
  • Bryan Barnett, Mayor, Rochester Hills, Michigan
  • John Brenner, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Municipal League
  • Mario Castillo, Councilmember, Houston, Texas
