NLC Statement on Targeted Political Violence in Minnesota

June 14, 2025 - (2 min read)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following the shootings in Minnesota this weekend that killed House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, National League of Cities (NLC) President Steve Patterson released the following statement:

“My heart goes out to the family, friends, and colleagues of House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and our prayers are with state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. This is an unspeakable tragedy, targeting local leaders who simply want to serve their communities to make them a better place. There is no place in America for political violence, full stop. And no matter your beliefs or politics, we have to be able to talk with one another. While local leaders continue to take action to stem gun violence, we must do more as a nation to end these tragedies in our schools, our places of worship, and our communities.”
