NLC Statement on President Biden’s Executive Order on Public Safety

May 25, 2022 - (1 min read)

“NLC supports President Biden’s Executive Order (EO) to increase accountability in federal law enforcement and provide additional federal tools such as guidance on best practices, training and technical assistance, and grantmaking to support reforms at State, Tribal, local, and territorial law enforcement agencies. Many of the policies outlined in the EO are also included in NLC’s resolution on the Use of Force by Law Enforcement Officers, including implementing and improving racial bias and de-escalation training; improving mental health and wellness services to law enforcement officers; and establishing a national database of decertified officers that local governments can use to vet officers who have been dismissed for such issues as unnecessary or excessive use of force, abuse of power, racial discrimination, and violation of individual’s civil rights.”
