WASHINGTON, D.C.  – National League of Cities (NLC) CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony issued the following statement after President Biden signed into law legislation to raise the federal government’s debt limit:

“On behalf of all cities, towns, and villages, we thank Congress and the Administration for finding a way to work together to raise the debt ceiling and avoid harm to our national economy and communities across the country. Hitting the debt ceiling could have had devastating downstream impacts on municipalities just as they are beginning to recover and rebuild. As local leaders continue to lead their communities through the COVID-19 pandemic, we are counting on Congress to avoid a debt crisis.”
