Small Cities, Big Impact
June is Small Cities Month at NLC! With 40% of the National population coming from cities with a population of 50,000 or less, small cities play a significant role in strengthening local government and shaping NLC’s initiatives, opportunities and federal advocacy. This amounts to 80 million citizens residing in small communities, accounting for three-quarters of all municipal governments in the United States.
As America celebrates 250 years of progress and possibility, we want to acknowledge the resilience of our small communities and the progress they’ve made to grow, adapt and strengthen their communities over time.
This year, we’re celebrating our small communities’ Pathways to Progress, recognizing the contributions of small cities, towns and villages across the country and celebrating the local leaders who help these communities grow, build and thrive.
Want to join the celebration? Here are three ways you and your community can join us:

1. Pass a Proclamation
NLC has developed a sample proclamation that you can introduce to your council to help mark this month’s commemoration. Download the sample proclamation below. Once it’s passed, upload it here to be featured!

2. Celebrate on Social
Celebrate Small Cities Month by sharing what progress looks like in your community today and the pathways your city took to get there. Highlight a project, milestone, partnership or success story that reflects your community’s impact and progress.
Be sure to tag National League of Cities and use #SmallCitiesMonth so we can help amplify your story throughout the month.

3. Explore NLC’s Small Cities Council
The Small Cities Council (SCC) is a network for elected officials leading municipalities with populations of 50k or less. It focuses on finding solutions, advocating for small communities and amplifying the voices and needs of small communities.
