NLC is closely monitoring the federal shutdown and advocating for the continuation of government operations. Join hundreds of local leaders urging Congress to reopen the federal government using our letter template.»

When do young people decide that local government is a rewarding career option? Or what makes them think it’s inefficient and bureaucratic? To be effective at recruiting the next generation of public servants, governments need to communicate with students via social media, volunteer opportunities and other methods to build awareness, and they need to do so long before graduation.

In a follow-up to its research focused on human resources managers and current employees 35 and under, MissionSquare Research Institute has surveyed undergraduates in academic fields associated with hard-to-fill occupations—engineering, information technology, criminal justice, finance and nursing. This session will shed light on students’ formative exposures to public service, what motivates them in their career decision-making, and where they feel they need more information. The graduate students who collected the data will participate in sharing the results, as well as providing detailed feedback to steer more targeted recruitment efforts.
