Why Austin? Learn About the 2014 Congress of Cities Host City

The Congress of Cities and Exposition is fast-approaching, and as the host city, we are thrilled to welcome you to our hometown in November. “The Future of Cities” is a fitting conference theme for a city that has been named numerous times recently as America’s Most Innovative City. Much of your visit will be spent soaking up as many ideas as possible in seminars, conference sessions and off-site Mobile Workshops around the city. But we hope you take some time during your trip to explore and enjoy all of the laid-back fun and beautiful sites of Austin.

Known as the Live Music Capital of the World ®, Austin, Texas boasts more than 250 live music venues located throughout the city. But there’s more to the city than just music. Austin, a city that features 300 days of annual sunshine, is a burgeoning foodie town and home to the United States Grand Prix Formula 1™ and so much more.

Austin’s celebrated live music scene inevitably continues to evolve and draw big name artists from all over the world to both perform and record. The astonishing number of live music venues represents every style and genre imaginable and the scene keeps growing. Some quintessential favorite local venues are The Moody Theatre at ACL Live, The Broken Spoke, Continental Club, Elephant Room and Emo’s.

The city is also full of numerous entertainment and shopping districts. A local favorite is South Congress. For a single street to warrant its own nickname and national spotlight as a vibrant neighborhood, it’s got to offer something pretty special. Referred to as SoCo, buzzy avenue South Congress offers a varied and eclectic strand of restaurants, bars, boutiques, music venues and food trucks, all anchored by a spectacular view of the State’s Capitol building. This would be a good area to wind down and network with your fellow attendees after a long day of sessions.

East Austin is perhaps the city’s newest district and is a cultural melting pot that has become a main attraction for locals and visitors alike. When you visit this part of town you never know which non-descript warehouse is actually an artist studio or gallery, a performance center, an urban farm or the newest restaurant, brewery or craft cocktail house.  There are also numerous delectable food trucks to experience including James Beard award winning chef Paul Qui’s Eastside King. Maybe you’ll even find some inspiration here to bring back to your own community.

With enough seats to fit 120,000 fans, Austin’s Circuit of the Americas (CoTA) is more than just a racetrack. You’ll definitely find Formula 1™ and MotoGP™, but the German designed facility is also home to a world-class live music 14,000-seat amphitheater.

The truth is, Austin and its inhabitants have always been on the cutting edge. And now the rest of the country is catching on. We promise, you’ll feel the infectious energy. Austin prides itself on being forward and open-minded, welcoming diversity and progress without ever losing its character. Whether it’s experiencing the independent spirit of the businesses on South Congress Avenue, watching the bustle of Sixth Street or taking in the galleries and cafes of blossoming East Austin, you‘ll definitely enjoy your time here in the ATX.
