NLC Statement on COVID-19 Relief Package Negotiations

Washington, D.C. – Following reports that the White House is preparing a new proposal for a COVID-19 relief package, National League of Cities (NLC) CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony issued the following statement:

“NLC is encouraged by reports that negotiations over a new relief package are continuing. For months, city leaders, businesses and economists alike have warned of the dire long-term consequences for our economy if Congress does not deliver municipalities the relief they need to make up for staggering revenue shortfalls and increased costs due to the pandemic. Our leaders in Washington must recognize that the economy is flashing new warning signs of decline because they have not delivered anticipated aid where it is urgently needed, including to municipal governments serving large and small communities throughout our nation.

“We urge Congress and the White House come quickly to an agreement that delivers for the American people, protecting those in need and providing critical resources to local leaders on the front lines of the pandemic.”

NLC launched the Cities Are Essential campaign in May, calling on the federal government to ensure there is flexible, direct funding relief provided to America’s municipalities.
