In a time when civic trust and community engagement are more crucial than ever, the Champions initiative from the LocalGov 250 coalition and the National Academy of Public Administration offers a powerful way to celebrate the individuals who are making a positive impact throughout the country.
This recognition effort is part of the broader America250 celebration and seeks to celebrate individuals from all levels of government including “elected officials (mayors, council members and state legislators), appointed executives, public safety (police, fire and EMS), public works, parks and recreation, community, economic and workforce development, public health, libraries, transportation, environmental management, energy and utilities and others that work in government.”
Once selected, up to “250 Government Champions” will be recognized nationwide. Winner profiles will be featured on the LocalGov 250 website, presented with framed certificates or awards, and may be invited to a celebration event in Philadelphia in May 2026.
Public servants often work behind the scenes managing local health programs, maintaining parks and public spaces, coordinating emergency responses and keeping infrastructure running. The Champions initiative gives these dedicated individuals a moment in the spotlight by recognizing their contributions while also boosting public awareness. Highlighting their commitment to making significant changes, creativity and compassion strengthens community trust and inspires civic pride. Featuring these Champions allows communities and organizations to connect to individuals making a true difference in America.
To nominate a Champion, first ensure your nominee meets the eligibility criteria. The individual must be currently working as a government employee or recently retired within the last ten years, and must exemplify the highest standards of public service.
Nominations are accepted from Sept. 15 through Nov. 15. Don’t miss the opportunity to recognize the unsung heroes in your community. By submitting a nomination, you can help celebrate their commitment, inspire others and be part of honoring the Champions shaping America’s future.
