Nearly 200 leaders from more than 40 cities nationwide started in the inaugural NLC High Performance Leadership Academy this week.
This diverse group includes representatives from large urban centers like Austin, TX and Cincinnati, OH, as well as leaders from smaller and rural communities such as Brentwood, MD and Sesser, IL. The connections and peer learning opportunities are building stronger cities across the country.
The High Performance Leadership Academy, developed in partnership with The Professional Development Academy, equips local government professionals with practical leadership tools, strategic thinking frameworks and collaboration strategies to lead high-performing teams in times of change. The 12-week online program is built for busy city leaders and blends cutting-edge leadership content with real-time application in their communities.
Through live cohort discussions, hands-on assignments and mentorship from top-performing city leaders and private sector executives, participants are learning how to drive results, build resilient teams and lead with purpose. The program emphasizes inclusive leadership, change management, and effective communication —skills essential for navigating the complex challenges facing local governments today.
“This is more than just professional development — it’s a movement,” said one city manager participating in the program. “The chance to grow alongside peers from cities both large and small has already given me new insights into what’s possible in my own community.”
As the academy grows, NLC is excited to continue investing in the next generation of municipal leadership through scholarships available to all attendees. By strengthening the skills and expanding the networks of local officials and city staff, the NLC High Performance Leadership Academy is laying the groundwork for more innovative, connected and effective local government across America.
