Five Things to Watch This Week at CCC

March 9, 2018 - (2 min read)

This Sunday, thousands of city leaders from across America convene in Washington to advocate for local priorities at the Congressional City Conference. From NLCU workshops to advocacy briefings and our Capitol Hill Advocacy Day, opportunities to engage at the federal level will abound.

Here’s our insider’s guide to how to engage, what to watch, and where to go to make the most of CCC 2018.

1. Develop partnerships with federal agencies
During the Federal Agency Round Robin workshop, local leaders will engage in a series of 20-minute conversations with Administration officials and hear first-hand about grants, tools, and technical assistance available for cities.

2. Make your voice heard and speak up for your city
Attend a Federal Advocacy Committee meeting to learn about the National Municipal policy positions related to various topics affecting cities. Learn what the seven committees will discuss this year at the conference.

3. Reimagine infrastructure to improve your community
The conference program focuses on best practices and tools for you to fix America’s crumbling infrastructure. During the general sessions, you’ll hear federal government officials and your local-level peers discuss policies and programs that support infrastructure for cities.

4. Discuss trends and solutions with fellow city leaders
Collaborate with other city leaders to find solutions to trending challenges affecting cities at these workshops:

  • Roundtable Discussion on Gun Violence
  • The Future of Marijuana Policy
  • What’s Happening in the Courts? A Judicial Update for City Leaders
  • Game-Changer for Affordable Housing
  • Successful Strategies to Address the Opioid Crisis
  • Smart Technology Coming to Your City

5. Network with local, state and federal officials from various communities
Get access to various networking events including state municipal league receptions, constituency group receptions and NLC council communities representing groups from first-tier suburbs, military, university, large and small cities.

However you make the most of this weekend — whether it’s with Capitol Hill advocacy, hands-on workshop learning, or crucial networking with your leadership colleagues — be sure to join the conversation with #NLCDC on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
