Councilmember Joel Navarro, Tempe, Arizona
How are you involved in NLC?
- President, Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO)
- Public Safety & Crime Prevention Steering Commitee
- Opioid Task Force
What was the experience or motivating factor that compelled you to join the HELO constituency group?
Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell encouraged me to join HELO. As I looked into the group, I saw the opportunity to advocate for issues on a national level that affect communities on a local level.
How has NLC enriched your leadership skills and experience?
I've gained knowledge and insights about national policies and initiatives that I would not otherwise have gained without NLC and HELO. My experiences have enabled me to develop strategies and navigate through obstacles to support local initiatives.
What are some challenges you face in your community that you feel being part of an NLC Constituency Group can help with?
There are many. As a resource, HELO generally provides policy ideas and programs that you can introduce at a local level to proactively strengthen your community.
Who is your favorite President and why?
Bill Clinton is my favorite President. He made a difference I could see in terms of his social and economic policies.
