NLC Past President Kathie Novak to Speak at 21st Annual Leadership Summit

Kathie Novak, former NLC President, has joined the speaker line-up for the 21st Annual Leadership Summit, to be held this year on September 26th-28th, in Savannah, Georgia. Ms. Novak will lead the second general session of the Leadership Summit on Friday, September 27th. Her session will focus on guiding participants on a path to finding common ground and resolving conflict within city council and local government.

Ms. Novak has an extensive history of involvement in local government and public service. She was a member of the Northglenn, Colo. City Council for 11 years, and served as Mayor of Northglenn for an additional eight years. During her time in public office, she served as President of the National League of Cities in 2009, and held numerous other leadership positions.

Ms. Novak has led numerous training programs for the NLC. In November, she will also co-lead two pre-conference training sessions at NLC’s Congress of Cities Conference in Seattle, “Priority Based Budgeting Part I & Part II.”

Currently, she is a lecturer for the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver, and a Senior Advisor with the Center for Priority Based Budgeting. She also serves as the Director for the Colorado Municipal Clerks Institute. She consults in the areas of leadership development, management training, team building, and facilitation.

The 21st Annual Leadership Summit, “Leading to Yes: Focusing on Strengths and Finding Common Ground,” will also feature presentations by Communications Consultant and former TV anchorwoman Lindsay Strand,  Commissioner Fatima A. Shama & Daniel Wallace of the New York Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, and former Savannah City Manager Michael Brown.

Clarence Anthony, NLC Executive Director, will also be there to provide a special welcome and share his vision for the new NLC University, an expanded education and training initiative that will make its debut at the 2013 Congress of Cities conference.

The National League of Cities’ Annual Leadership Summit is an interactive leadership retreat designed specifically for local government officials. At this year’s Summit in Savannah, leadership scholars and field experts will explore ways to effectively find common ground and resolve conflict within personal, community, and statewide relationships. Summit participants will learn to assess their own communication style and relate effectively to others.

Participants will enjoy the opportunity to experience Savannah outside of the classroom as well; NLC has collaborated with Mayor Jackson and the City of Savannah to bring participants an exciting taste of the host city, including two special evening receptions and local area tours.
