National League of Cities Statement on Iowa Police Shootings
WASHINGTON — Early this morning, two Iowa police officers were fatally shot in their patrol cars. The National League of Cities (NLC) strongly condemns all acts of senseless violence such as the one seen this morning. The following statement may be attributed to NLC CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony:
"This morning, officers from the cities of Urbandale and Des Moines, Iowa, were slain in a senseless act of brutality against law enforcement agents. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and communities of the slain officers as they reel with pain and loss. We offer any assistance we can to Mayor Andeweg and Mayor Crownie during this difficult time.
"Today's tragic shootings reinforce the necessity of having a dialogue that can improve the relationship between police and the communities they serve. Violence serves no purpose other than to weaken and divide our country."
