Google to Highlight Technological Innovation at NLC University Leadership Summit
Technological innovation is changing the world in which city leaders are operating at a dramatic pace. Participants in the 2014 NLC University Leadership Summit, taking place August 13-16 in Silicon Valley, will get a first-hand look at some of these revolutionary transformations through a special tour of the Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.
In addition to two days of intensive seminars offering practical strategies for driving innovation in city government and the local economy, participants will spend the final afternoon of the Summit engaged in substantive discussions with several of Google’s teams -- including the civic innovation team, Google Fiber and Google X -- that are working on a wide array of issues relevant to local governments.
Through the civic innovation team, Google is investing in new avenues to open government data and make civic information on U.S. cities transparent, available and useable. They are also supporting efforts, such as open source code, to promote the development of civic apps and new services that utilize this newly accessible data.
Google’s rapidly expanding fiber initiative is helping cities to dramatically increase the speed of local Internet available to residents and local businesses.
Finally, demonstrations and discussions will expose participants to the innovative efforts of the Google X team, which is reshaping how we will operate in the future, whether through Google glass or driverless cars.
As the talk by Natalie Vernon, Google’s Manager for Social Impact and Civic Innovation, at NLC’s Big Ideas for Cities event in April demonstrates, this visit will be an inspiring way to conclude this summit focused on Leadership through Innovation.
