Strengthening & promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership, and governance

The National League of Cities is committed to strengthening and promoting the leadership capacity of our nations' local elected officials.  More than 3,000 mayors, council members, and local leaders participate in Leadership Training Institute seminars and programs designed to explore the nature and practice of local government leadership.

Upcoming Leadership Seminars...

The Leadership Training Institute promotes excellence in municipal leadership through high quality education
and training seminars for local elected and appointed officials.  Through the Institute, local city leaders learn practical leadership skills, abilities and strategies to lead change and innovation in their local communities.

Each year the Leadership Training Institute offers a wide variety of National and Regional Seminars across the United States for local city officials.

Leadership Training Council
The work of the Leadership Training Institute is guided by the Leadership Training Council, which is made up of local elected officials appointed annually by the NLC President.  The principal mission of the LTC is to provide guidance and direction to the National League of Cities' Leadership Training Institute and serve as a vehicle for National League of Cities Leadership positions.
Learn more information about the current Leadership Training Council.

Certificate of Achievement in Leadership program
As part of the NLC mission to create stronger communities, the Leadership Training Institute was established to provide local officials with professional development opportunities that accentuate the vital personal skills and abilities needed to facilitate positive change and innovation within their communities.  The Leadership Training Institute has developed the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program in an effort to recognize and acknowledge excellence in local government leadership.

Call for Leadership Seminar Trainers
You are invited to share your knowledge and expertise in leadership development at our upcoming Leadership Training Institute programs.  The Leadership Training Institute is designed to meet the education and leadership training needs of our local elected officials and top appointed local government leaders in the United States.  If you are a professional educator, trainer, or local government expert, you are invited to submit a proposal to present a future LTI Seminar program.
