Local elected and appointed officials can apply for a scholarship that will cover the registration fees for the upcoming program ?Comprehensive Community Planning: Workforce and Affordable Housing,? announced LTC Vice-Chair Barb Carter, Council Member from Tempe, Ariz. This new scholarship is primarily intended for those NLC member who have not previously attended any of NLC's Leadership Training Institute seminars.
The scholarship, sponsored by the Leadership Training Council, will cover the $395 registration fee for the seminar, which is co-sponsored by the Fannie Mae Foundation and the League of Arizona Cities and Towns. Elected and appointed officials from NLC Member Cities who have not attended a Leadership Training Institute seminar are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.
'Comprehensive Community Planning: Workforce and Affordable Housing' will be held in Tempe, Ariz., April 27-29. Speakers and trainers include Henry Cisneros, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Sheila D. Harris, Director of the Arizona Department of Housing; and Nicolas Retsinas, Director of Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies, as well as several local and state elected officials and other national housing experts. The seminar program includes plenary sessions, a panel discussion, and concurrent tracks offering an in-depth exploration of workforce housing and expanding home ownership.
"I am confident that for so many of us local officials, housing is one of our most crucial issues," said Jackson, Miss. Councilmember Leslie Burl McLemore, Chair of the 2006 Leadership Training Council. McLemore continued, "This is a exceptionally timely topic and I encourage all local elected officials to come to Tempe in April to attend this very important seminar."
Leadership Training Institute seminars provide NLC members with intensive, hands-on training in subjects relevant to local governance. Knowledge experts and professional trainers for LTI seminars design their program so that participants can develop new skills, engage in small group discussions with colleagues from other cities and towns, and walk away with vital tools that they can put into practice in their own communities.
Seminar participants also earn eight credits in NLC?s Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program. Although the scholarship does not cover travel or housing expenses, the Council hopes to put attendance within reach of more NLC members by covering the cost of registration.
"Offering this scholarship is an excellent way for this seminar to reach those city officials who might not have the resources and the chance to attend," commented Doug Echols, Rock Hill, SC Mayor and Vice-Chair of the Leadership Training Council.
