NLC Applauds House for Passing Housing Reform Bill
07/24/08
Washington, DC – Statement by the president of the National League of Cities, Cynthia McCollum, Council Member, Madison, Alabama, on the passing of HR 3221, the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act. The House passed the landmark federal housing reform and foreclosure mitigation bill on Wednesday and the Senate is now considering the measure.
“As President of the National League of Cities, I speak for communities across the country in expressing our appreciation for the recent efforts undertaken by the White House and Congressional leaders to overcome their differences on H.R. 3221, the American Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act.
“The resources called for in the legislation will have an immediate positive impact on the economy generally and will provide much needed leverage to protect families at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure and help communities stabilize innocent neighborhoods that have been victimized by the housing crisis through no fault of their own.
“We commend the House for passing this important legislation and urge the Senate to take up consideration of the bill as soon as possible.
“With the President’s decision to sign the legislation, there is renewed hope that America's families, communities, and the economy will get much needed relief from Washington sooner rather than later.”
