At this year’s Congress of Cities, & Exposition in Denver, the Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials (APAMO), an NLC constituency group, had the opportunity to hear about a new program known as Cinema Asian America being promoted by Comcast, an NLC corporate partner.

APAMO President Gilbert Wong, recently elected mayor of Cupertino, Calif., expressed his enthusiasm about the program and wanted to ensure that APAMO members and colleagues learned about its purpose.

“We have an opportunity to engage more members of the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) community in more media opportunities. Let us explore what can be made available to us.”

Comcast announced the launch of Cinema Asian America, a new On Demand destination featuring Asian American content that reflects the diversity and depth of Asian American culture and its cinema. The new offering gives individuals access to classics, award-winning movies featured on the film festival circuit and short- and feature-length works with genres ranging from documentary to experimental. This effort is designed to provide more content choice and programming that reflects the diversity of the Asian community.

APAMO also cosponsored an NLC Leadership Training Institute seminar, “The Restoration of Community: Fiscal Accountability and Community Engagement,” during the conference. It focused on the topic of restoring a community’s fiscal stability by creating effective processes and procedures and developing crosscutting leadership skills to coordinate partnerships and funding.

APAMO also co-hosted a joint Constituency Group Reception cosponsored with the Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) and Women in Municipal Government (WIMG). At the event, APAMO honored Pacific Western Technologies Ltd., an award-winning, minority-woman owned business headquartered in Wheat Ridge, Colo. Ding-Wen Hsu, owner and president, was honored for her leadership.

During its Business Meeting, APAMO members heard from candidates for the NLC Board of Directors.

As part of its business, it also discussed a new initiative to identify APIA local officials within the NLC database to communicate with them about APAMO’s goals and engage them as new members. They also discussed the recent election of APAMO Immediate Past President Jean Quan as the new mayor of Oakland, Calif.
