FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Supreme Court Decision Must Be Given a Chance to Work

June 28, 2012

Washington, DC - The following statement is from Ted Ellis, mayor of Bluffton, IN and president of the National League of Cities responding to today's Supreme Court's decision on the Affordable Care Act.

"As one of the largest employers in the nation's economy, the rising costs of health care are a primary concern for local governments. With millions of uninsured individuals in our communities, the availability of affordable and adequate health care coverage is also a primary concern.

"The Affordable Care Act proposes to help employers reduce the costs of providing health care to their employees and families while ensuring that more of those who need access to health care services can get it. No law is perfect, but we must give it a chance.

"In light of today's Supreme Court decision pronouncing the law constitutional, it's time for Congress to use the time remaining in this session to focus on initiatives that will put Americans back to work."

The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
