Shop Local, Invest Big: Small Business Saturday is Just Around the Corner

City leaders know that Main Street retailers and small businesses are a vital part of their communities. These businesses create jobs, improve neighborhoods and help make cities better places to work, live and play. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses represent most of the jobs in our communities, and have generated 64 percent of the new jobs created over the past 15 years. Small businesses play a critical role in providing local employment opportunities and generating local tax revenue to strengthen the economic base of cities and keep communities vibrant.

NLC and many of its members are helping to support local businesses through participation in Small Business Saturday, happening this year on November 30. “For our cities to continue to thrive and grow, I urge you to participate in Small Business Saturday and shop local this holiday season,” said NLC President Chris Coleman, mayor, Saint Paul, Minn. in a recent statement.

Now in its fourth year nationally, Small Business Saturday is intended to help draw attention to locally owned businesses in communities across the country. Cities and organizations encourage holiday shoppers, now familiar with the post-Thanksgiving Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, to patronize their communities’ local businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The over 28 million small businesses across the United States face many challenges, whether from ongoing economic turmoil, regulatory challenges or competition with online retailers. As the 2013 holiday season kicks into high gear, NLC encourages city officials and residents to show support for small and local businesses by shopping at local retailers on November 30 and afterwards.

Last year, American Express, the founder of Small Business Saturday, estimated that supporters spent over $5.5 billion at independently owned businesses on Small Business Saturday.
