Members of the National League of Cities who are interested in attending the 2014 NLC University Leadership Summit are eligible to apply for a $2,500 Michael H.T. Lynch Memorial Scholarship. The application process is currently underway with a deadline of July 15, 2014. The scholarship recipient can use the award to cover Leadership Summit registration costs and defray travel expenses.

The 2014 NLC University Leadership Summit, entitled Leading through Innovation, will take place in Santa Clara, CA from August 13-16, 2014. This summit will promote personal leadership development focused on new ways of thinking, and highlight opportunities to drive innovation within city government and in the local economy. NLC will also take advantage of the location in Silicon Valley to highlight how data and technology are changing city government.

In February of 2008, Councilmember Michael Lynch died tragically during a shooting at a council meeting in Kirkwood, Missouri. To this day, the legacy of his service continues to inspire city leaders and citizens alike to better serve their communities.

NLC established the Michael H.T. Lynch Memorial Scholarship to honor the life and work of Michael Lynch, who was an active proponent of education and training for his fellow elected officials.

The Lynch Memorial Scholarship grants a $2,500 stipend to one local elected or appointed official from an NLC member city to attend the annual NLC University Leadership Summit.

The Leadership Summit is a retreat-style program designed to develop the personal leadership skills of local city officials. Councilmember Lynch regularly attended the Leadership Summit and actively promoted the program to other officials.
