In February of 2008, Councilmember Michael Lynch died tragically during a shooting at a council meeting in Kirkwood, Missouri. To this day, the legacy of his service continues to inspire city leaders and citizens alike to better serve their communities.
The NLC Leadership Training Council established the Michael H.T. Lynch Memorial Scholarship to honor the life and work of Michael Lynch. Councilmember Lynch was an active member of the Leadership Training Council. He was a proponent of education and training for his fellow elected officials, and the Certificate of Achievement in Leadership Program. As Jeffrey Quibell of Blue Springs, Missouri, notes, "I met Michael Lynch in 2005 when I first attended an NLC conference. We quickly became friends and he encouraged me to pursue LTI training."
The Lynch Memorial Scholarship grants a $2,500 stipend to one local elected or appointed official from an NLC member city to attend the Leadership Training Institute's annual Leadership Summit. The Leadership Summit is a retreat-style program designed to develop the personal leadership skills of local city officials. Councilmember Lynch regularly attended the Leadership Summit and actively promoted the program to other officials.
At the Leadership Summit, Councilmember Lynch effortlessly connected with his peers. "I found his experience, encouragement, and wonderful sense of humor invaluable as I navigated that steep learning curve as a newly elected official," reflects Carolyn Comitta, the Mayor of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Mayor Comitta's fond memories of Michael Lynch were shared by many. Other officials often remarked on his natural ability to engage with new participants and let them know that they had a support system within the NLC community.
The 2013 Michael H.T. Lynch Memorial Scholarship application process is currently underway. The application deadline is July 15, 2013. The scholarship recipient will be awarded $2,500 to attend NLC's 21st Annual Leadership Summit, Leading to Yes: Focusing on Strengths and Finding Common Ground, which will take place in Savannah, Georgia from September 26-28th, 2013.
