Operation AmeriCorps Wants to Hear From You

August 25, 2014

By Kimberly Allman, Corporation for National and Community Service

When CNCS speaks to governors, mayors, and community leaders across the nation, we sometimes ask the following question: What is the big, hairy, audacious goal that would be a game changer for your community? A new initiative called Operation AmeriCorps helps answer that question.

Through Operation AmeriCorps, mayors, county executives, and other civic leaders will use AmeriCorps members to help them tackle their communities’ most pressing challenges.

We are taking the next few weeks to listen to our colleagues and partners and gather feedback on specific project ideas.  This information and your comments will help us structure the future funding competition.  Please send your comments, questions, or ideas about how you would use Operation AmeriCorps in your city to  OperationAmeriCorps@cns.gov.

We have also set up conference calls for you to learn more about this this exciting new program and how it could work in your community.  We invite you to join one of the calls below:

Cities

  • DATE: Tuesday, August 26, 3:00-4:00 pm EST
  • CALL IN NUMBER: 888-889-1957
  • PASSCODE: 6951107

Cities/Counties

  • DATE: Wednesday, September 3, 3:00-4:00 pm EST
  • CALL IN NUMBER: 888-950-5924
  • PASSCODE: 2636899

Through Operation AmeriCorps, all three of our AmeriCorps programs will be made available in a single application.  So, for the first time, local leaders will be able to design a comprehensive project that engages AmeriCorps State and National programs, harnesses AmeriCorps VISTA’s poverty-focused capacity building, and taps AmeriCorps NCCC’s surge capacity.  We have included more information here.

One final note.  AmeriCorps will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on September 12 with a nationwide pledge ceremony, and we hope you will join us.  One quick and easy way to participate is to join our Thunderclap campaign.  Sign up to donate a Tweet or Facebook post to wish AmeriCorps a happy birthday and thank the 900,000 men and women who have served.
