NLC Officially Welcomes the Sustainable Cities Institute

NLC's Sustainability Program is proud to officially announce and welcome the Sustainable Cities Institute (SCI) to the Center for Research and Innovation. Announced last fall, and celebrated throughout the 2011 Congress of Cities and Exposition, the official transition of SCI to NLC underscores the organization's commitment to locally led sustainability and marks the beginning of a significant expansion of NLC's work in this area.

The Sustainable Cities Institute was created in 2009 by The Home Depot Foundation (THDF), an NLC Capstone Corporate Partner. From the beginning, SCI was envisioned and designed as a dynamic toolbox to help cities identify, plan for and implement holistic, long-term approaches to community-wide sustainability. NLC is committed to the ongoing development of SCI as a resource for city leaders, sustainability professionals and engaged stakeholders.

Following this transition, SCI will become the centerpiece initiative within NLC to catalyze, inform, celebrate and support the efforts of local government as leaders in advancing and strengthening the social, economic and environmental sustainability of cities and towns across the country.

Moving forward, NLC is excited to work with existing SCI partners, such as the Urban Sustainability Directors Network and the SCI Advisory Board.

NLC will also explore opportunities to expand partnerships, and will seek feedback and contributions from NLC members across the country, particularly city leaders and staff engaged with sustainability efforts in their communities.

Over the next few months, NLC will work closely with these groups to conduct an in-depth assessment of SCI and identify ways to grow this resource.

Details: Those who are interested in being part of conversations regarding the development of SCI or would like to contribute feedback, submit a resource or learn more about SCI should contact Tammy Zborel at zborel@nlc.org.
