Washington, D.C. - The National League of Cities (NLC) today announced the start of the third annual National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, a community service campaign to encourage cities nationwide to be more mindful of the water they use. The annual program, held during Earth Month (April 1-30), encourages elected officials to inspire their cities' residents to make pledges and support water conservation efforts. Residents can make their pledge online at www.mywaterpledge.com, where energy-saving resources, cost-saving tips and other educational resources are provided. The National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation is a partnership between NLC, the Wyland Foundation, Toyota and other stakeholders.
"Saving water is a critical part of a city's resiliency, particularly in light of the extreme weather conditions seen in many parts of the nation," said NLC Executive Director Clarence Anthony. "Our cities' residents can make a positive impact by limiting their water consumption and becoming more knowledgeable about the effects of their actions on water supply and water quality. Everyone participating in this challenge is helping to make a difference and is working to create a sustainable future."
With at least 36 states facing water shortages this year, water conservation has become a national imperative, bringing attention to the need for more education and knowledge of natural resources. Participating mayors will ask city residents to show their commitment to conserving water and cutting pollution by taking part in this program to drastically slash water and energy usage nationwide.
Cities may participate at any time during the 30 day challenge. The current list of cities participating in this year's challenge is available on the website. In 2013, residents from more than 1,000 cities in all 50 U.S. states pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater, waste sent to landfills, greenhouse gas emissions and hazardous waste from entering our watersheds.
In addition to NLC, the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, the Annual National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation is partnering with the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Water, U.S. Forest Service, The Toro Company, Wondergrove Kids, Bytelaunch and WaterSmart Software.
