FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

National League of Cities Encouraged by Bipartisan Approach to Immigration

January 28, 2013

Marie Lopez Rogers, president of the National League of Cities, and mayor of Avondale, AZ., released the following statement responding to today's immigration framework announcement by the bipartisan group of Senators lead by Senator Schumer:

"For years NLC has been a strong advocate of fixing our nation's broken immigration system. For too long, the poorly performing system has contributed to financial, cultural and political strain in our nation's communities. Comprehensive reform is needed now to provide cities and towns with the support they need as they continue to integrate immigrants into their communities.

"We thank Senators Schumer, Durbin, Menendez, Bennet, McCain, Graham, Rubio, and Flake for coming together to offer their framework for reforming our nation's broken immigration system. We are encouraged by the bipartisan nature of the effort, and hope it will be seen as the beginning of the long awaited and much needed process.

"We hope that the cooperative and bipartisan effort by Congress and the Administration to act quickly - will resolve this issue. NLC cities and towns need a resolution now!"

The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
