New Jersey State Senator Ronald L. Rice will be this year’s National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) Luncheon keynote speaker at the Congress of Cities in Seattle. NBC-LEO President Jacquelyn E. Johnson, councilwoman, East Orange, N.J. enthusiastically noted, “Not only am I proud to have a Senator from my state speak to NBC-LEO, but we will also hear from my fellow East Orange City Councilmember William Holt, first regional Director of NBC-LEO and part of the founding group of NBC-LEO. These two men made it possible to grow and expand our network into what we are today. We are thankful to them and we will continue their legacy.”
This event will feature a brief awards presentation to honor a local leader for their civic duty. NBC-LEO has chosen to honor Norman B. Rice, the first and only African American Mayor of Seattle and currently the President and CEO of the Seattle Foundation.
Maud Daudon, President and CEO of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce will be this year’s Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) Leadership Awards Luncheon keynote speaker at the Congress of Cities. Daudon assumed her current role after 10 years with the Seattle-Northwest Securities Corporation (SNW), a Seattle-based independent, employee-owned, regionally focused investment bank, broker-dealer and asset management firm specializing in debt securities and related businesses. As President and CEO of the firm, Daudon navigated the toughest period in financial services since the Great Depression.
The WIMG luncheon will also feature the WIMG Leadership Awards Program, which recognizes a female local official for unique and outstanding leadership in local government. The winner is recognized for individual achievement in initiating creative and successful programs in local government, particularly if they serve as a specific mentoring model for future female leaders. “WIMG is thrilled to continue its Leadership Award Program in partnership with NLC and our corporate sponsors. The award offers us the opportunity to recognize a strong female leader from our nation’s cities and towns. We encourage participation from women across the NLC network to become nominees for the program so they may be recognized at the national level for their exemplary work in mentoring and leadership,” said WIMG President Mary Brown, councilwoman, Gary, Ind.
The NBC-LEO luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 14, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Sponsors include Comcast, Wells Fargo, CIGNA and Southwest Airlines. The NLC Service Line Warranty Program administered by Utility Service Partners is an exclusive sponsor to the NBC-LEO Evening Reception to be held later that day from 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
The WIMG luncheon will be held on Friday, November 15 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Sponsors for the luncheon include CIGNA, ICMA-RC, Comcast, Wells Fargo, Southwest Airlines, and Black & Veatch.
New Way to Pay Your NLC Constituency Group Dues!
Beginning this year, NBC-LEO, WIMG and the other groups are now using a new, more efficient approach for handling dues payments. In the past, annual dues for all of the groups were combined with the groups’ activity fees each year through the Congress of Cities registration process. This year, your dues will be paid separately from activity fees, ahead of or at the Congress of Cities. This new process was designed to help NLC update its membership database more quickly and assist the groups in better meeting the needs of their members. Current NBC-LEO and WIMG members have been sent invoices to re-join for 2014. Individuals who haven’t yet renewed their dues payments may do so at the conference.
Remember to pay your $165 NBC-LEO Activity Fee (includes luncheon ticket, evening reception, hospitality) or $85 (luncheon ticket only) for the Seattle conference! There is also a $75 WIMG Activity Fee (luncheon ticket and reception) or $50 (luncheon ticket only). These costs are separate from the NBC-LEO and WIMG dues and can be paid for at the conference registration desk or in advance of the conference through online registration.
