Mayors' Education Task Force
Mayors' dedicated to the improvement and advancement of education in their communities come together bi-annuallly to shape a local agenda on supproting children and youth access.
In 2012, Mayor Chris Coleman of Saint Paul, MN and Mayor Ralph Becker of Salt Lake City, Utah led an effort to engage the U.S. Department of Education in a partnership. A task force of mayors was formed, representing over 40 large and medium-sized cities, to focus on changing outcomes for the youth of their cities. Through this task force, a formal partnership with the U.S. Department of Education was established. The Mayors' Education Task Force goal is to promote partnerships between city hall, school, districts, teacher unions, community and faith based organizations, and business leaders to create local solutions to support youth success. Furthermore, the task force leverages mayor's voices to push for educationreform on Capitol Hll that impacts youth, schools, and families in their communities.
The signing of a "Memo of Understanding" (MOU) between the National League of Cities (NLC) and the U.S. Department of Education in February 2014 created a plan to host "community conversations" in 15 cities across the nation. The conversations focused on three main goals: early childhood education, afterschool and postsecondary attainment. Below are brief profiles of each community conversation that has taken place so far. Each profile attempts to capture the unique and locally driven efforts of the cities.
The Task Force continues to meet bi-annually in March at NLC's COngressional City COnference and November at the NLC's City Summit. These meetings connect mayors in a small intimate setting where honest and contructive conversations take place. NLC continues to provide the Task Force through the year with tailored resources to support improving educational outcomes and college and career success amongst cities' most vulnerable citizen.
