POSITION TITLE: DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE CENTER/OFFICE: RESEARCH AND MUNICIPAL PROGRAMS HIRING RANGE: $40,000-$42,000
General Description
Responsible for key aspects of conducting a program development and foundation fundraising program including finding and researching new funding sources, building relationships with foundations, writing letters of inquiry and proposals, and managing reporting requirements. Also responsible for support of the Advisory Council and their work as part of the CityFutures Program, including research, writing, and meeting planning. Reports to Manager, Program Development and CityFutures Process.
Examples of Work
Develops and edits letters of inquiry and grant proposals to foundations, tracks prospects and submissions, maintains contact with foundation program officers as appropriate, with coordination with Manager and Center Director.
Conducts the day-to-day activities of staffing the Advisory Council: responds to member questions and problems, manages member information, researches and recommends materials, and coordinates communication with members (both electronic and mailings).
Prepares grant reporting and tracks submission deadlines; tracks multiple grant project budgets; manages, updates and maintains hard copy and electronic funder files and database.
Researches and gathers information on priority topics; analyzes information and prepares reports for use by Advisory Council members and other members. Coordinates production of multiple publications, including the Futures Reports, other reports, and Municipal Action Guides
Works closely with program staff to complete both funding proposals and project reporting.
Coordinates key aspects of up to three Advisory Council meetings per year: manages meeting logistics, secures speakers/consultants, coordinates on-site details, works directly with host site representative for summer meeting, etc.
Contributes to the development of long-term program planning, with direction from the Manager and Center Director, related to future program development and foundation funding.
Carries out the development and maintenance of pages on NLC’s website related to the Advisory Council and their work.
Establishes and manages a stewardship and communication program with current and prospective funders.
Drafts correspondence for signature by Center Director, Executive Director, and Advisory Council Chair.
Responds to inquiries; writes articles for NCW and other publications.
Travel required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree; two to four year relevant work experience in a not-for profit setting, preferably in a development office, or a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience researching, writing, and administering grants from foundations preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Broad familiarity with municipal issues and urban affairs; excellent analytical skills; excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; meeting logistics skills; familiarity with information technologies and on-line computer services; knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Access; knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and proofreading skills; must be highly organized and able to handle multiple tasks with attention to detail and deadlines; ability to interact effectively with members, the public, and all levels of NLC staff.
