POSITION: SENIOR PROGRAM ASSOCIATE, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
CENTER/OFFICE: INSTITUTE FOR YOUTH, EDUCATION, AND FAMILIES
HIRING RANGE: $53,152 – $60,000

General Description:
Responsible for providing primary program and research support for the Institute’s work in areas related to childhood obesity, including support for city efforts to implement a comprehensive citywide wellness policy that promotes physical activity, access to healthy foods, and healthy eating among children and youth. Reports to the Institute’s Program Director for Youth Development.
Examples of Work:
Gathers information on initiatives in NLC member cities and other communities that promote a wellness strategy focused on youth development and respond to the needs of children and youth who are considered obese or at risk of becoming obese
Provides technical assistance and responds to requests for information from NLC member cities, state municipal leagues, and other interested parties on topics related to youth development, wellness, and childhood obesity.
Plans, organizes, and leads programs and events associated with technical assistance and peer networking initiatives sponsored by the Institute in areas related to youth development, including the implementation of comprehensive citywide wellness policies for children and youth and strategies for combating childhood obesity.
Conceptualizes and serves as primary author of new reports, strategy guides, and toolkits for NLC member cities; prepares articles for NLC’s weekly newspaper, publications, monthly newsletters, and other publications; and develops program summaries and other content for posting on the YEF Institute’s pages of NLC’s Web site
Actively develops and cultivates partnerships with other national organizations and federal agencies working in the youth development and childhood obesity fields, and identifies opportunities to draw upon these partnerships in order to broaden the array of resources available to municipal leaders in NLC member cities.
Plans and implements workshops and meetings at NLC’s two annual conferences – the Congress of Cities and the Congressional City Conference – as well as the YEF Institute’s biennial Summit on Your City’s Families.
Represents NLC at national, regional, and state conferences and meetings in order to build new partnerships, raise the visibility of NLC’s work, and stay abreast of the latest developments in the childhood obesity and youth development fields.
Contributes to the development of long-term work plans, foundation proposals, and reports to funders related to the Institute’s work on childhood obesity and youth development.
Serves as a resource on related issues to other NLC staff.
Some travel required.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in public policy, social work, education, or a related field preferred; minimum of six years progressively responsible relevant experience in policy analysis, program development, or research; experience with association or membership organization preferred, or a combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of issues related to childhood obesity, including a familiarity with wellness policy implementation strategies; experience in working with city officials, and/or knowledge of city initiatives in these areas preferred. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as ability to interact effectively with NLC members, representatives of other organizations, consultants, and all levels of NLC staff. Experience with and ability to manage foundation relationships. Demonstrated management skills, including planning, organizing, scheduling and implementing projects of substantial complexity and variety.
