Policy & Research Intern

NLC’s Policy & Research Internships provide students with the opportunity to work on a wide variety of public policy issues including:  education, environment, tax, international relations, immigration, transportation, telecommunications, community and economic development, healthcare, public safety and many others.  NLC requires interns to work on substantive public policy projects, which include research and oral and written communication components.  Additionally, interns are fully incorporated into the NLC staff to learn the value of teamwork in an office environment and how to work with other professionals on a daily basis to complete a task. 

Specific Duties may include: 

  • Assisting policy staff by researching policy issues at the local and federal levels;
  • Assisting research staff with NLC surveys and research;
  • Attending meetings and hearings and reporting back to staff;
  • Writing for the weekly newspaper, Nation’s Cities Weekly, or other communications vehicles; and
  • Providing administrative support as needed.

Requirements include excellent oral and written communication skills and strong organizational skills; students of public policy or law preferred.  These are unpaid internships. 

The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest national organization for American cities. NLC serves as a resource and advocate for 18,000 cities, towns and villages of all sizes, from New York City to Bee Cave, Texas, which collectively serve 225 million people.
