A City Platform for Strengthening Families and Improving Outcomes for Children and Youth (2005)

The two-part platform developed by NLC's Council on Youth, Education, and Families, urges every city and town to take concrete steps on behalf of children, youth, and families.  The platform identifies the "essential infrastructure" needed for sustained progress on behalf of children, youth, and families, and offers a menu of ideas and action steps that cities of any size can take in each of seven issue areas. Nearly 100 cities formally adopted and implemented recommendations from the platform.

Municipal Leadership for America's Children Youth, and Families: Celebrating Five Years of the YEF Institute (2005)

This publication is the fifth anniversary report of NLC's Institute for Youth, Education, and Families (YEF Institute).

Since it was founded in 2000, the YEF Institute has become an indispensable national resource for mayors, councilmembers, and other city leaders. This report describes how the Institute has made a difference by making the case for municipal leadership, supporting local action, connecting people and places, and raising the profile of municipal leaders as key problem-solvers.

This agenda booklet offers policy and program options, as well as a broad range of action steps for local officials seeking new ways of doing business that will lead to better outcomes for children, families, and their neighborhoods.

The book encompasses a brief statement on What Municipal Leaders Must Do and provides a menu of suggested action steps to connect families to economic opportunities, effective services and supports, and social networks.
