Transitional Jobs Project 2002-04
In April 2002, the YEF Institute competitively selected ten cities to participate in a 24-month technical assistance project to establish transitional jobs programs for hard-to-employ individuals. These programs provide paid work experience to help participants secure permanent jobs with family supporting wages.
The selected cities included:
- Baltimore, Md.;
- Detroit, Mich.;
- Fort Wayne, Ind.;
- Jackson, Miss.;
- Richmond, Calif.;
- San Antonio, Texas;
- Syracuse, N.Y.;
- Virginia Beach, Va.;
- Waco, Texas; and
- Winston-Salem, N.C.
This technical assistance project was conducted in partnership with the Center on Law and Social Policy, the Transitional Work Corporation of Philadelphia, and the National Transitional Jobs Network. Each of the ten selected cities gained access to a broad range of benefits including:
- Direct access to national experts;
- Individualized design and implementation support;
- Assistance exploring the federal and state funding options available to support local jobs programs; and
- Opportunities to participate in a cross-site network of municipal leaders.
