Municipal officials from across the nation are invited to attend the second National City Afterschool Summit, which will highlight and promote the leadership of city and school officials in providing quality afterschool programs for children and youth.  The Summit will take place May 12-14, 2008, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Co-sponsored by NLC's Institute for Youth, Education, and Families, the Afterschool Alliance, the American Association of School Administrators, and the National School Boards Association, and supported by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and The Wallace Foundation, the Summit will offer municipal officials, school board members, and superintendents the opportunity to:

  • Hear from national experts about the future of federal and state support for afterschool;
  • Network and learn from peers about city strategies for afterschool investment, financing and sustainability, and innovative city-school partnerships;
  • Strengthen ties between city and school leaders to create a unified vision for afterschool;
  • Celebrate the efforts of mayors and councilmembers who are champions for quality afterschool programs; and
  • Meet with Congressional leaders to make afterschool programs a national priority.

By supporting and strengthening afterschool efforts, cities are making major investments in their young people.  They understand that afterschool programs improve public safety, help working families, improve academic achievement, and support healthier and happier young people.  More than 100 municipal leaders gathered two years ago for the first-ever National City Afterschool Summit to highlight the leadership of local officials in creating, improving and expanding access to afterschool programs for children and youth.

City officials are encouraged to attend the 2008 National City Afterschool Summit in teams with their school district officials.  Those interested in attending the Summit should contact Bela Shah at (202) 626-3057 or shah@nlc.orgRegistration information will be available soon!
