Assessment of City Policies that Expand High School Options and Alternatives

This summer, the YEF Institute plans to publish a broad assessment of city-level policies related to alternative school models, including opportunities for replication or expansion of these models.  The assessment will include the following:

  • Review of city-level policies - municipal ordinances as well as school district rules and regulations - that either help or hinder the operations of high-achieving alternative schools;
  • Analysis of problems or barriers that impede the successful operation of alternative models for high school;
  • Identification of promising alternative school models that reflect the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's principles of high-achieving schools in urban and rural settings; and
  • Explorations of local conditions and circumstances that appear to be well-suited for the location of new alternative models.
