More Youth Council Spotlights

Rock Hill, SC

Rock Hill Youth Council held their annual Youth Service Weekend on 3-24-07.

After six years, Rock Hill, S.C.'s Youth Council is thriving.  Made up of 25 high school students, the youth council organizes a number of different activities.  In their second year of a youth philanthropy project, where youth council members give grants to local youth for service projects around the city, the youth council again held an Application Workshop Day in the fall for local youth to attend and learn about the grant application process.  In order to be eligible to apply for the funds, the youth must attend this workshop.

In celebrating National Youth Service Day at a time convenient for the community, the Youth Council held their annual Youth Service Weekend on March 24, 2007.

The Youth Council serves as a host team that encourages other Rock Hill youth organizations to do at least four hours of community service during that weekend.  To launch the weekend, the youth council organized a kick-off event with music and food.  They then held a "sending forth" for the youth to do their service.

More that 230 youth volunteered and completed 15 different projects in the community, ranging from: adopting a highway, helping with an Easter party for the disabled, hosting a carnival for children in crisis and volunteering at a women's shelter.

Mayor Doug Echols is in the center of the picture with some of the students at the kick off. The Rock Hill Youth Council organizes the day by recruiting  groups to participate and hosts a kick off party with food, music and free National Youth Service Day shirts.

"In Rock Hill, our youth make up 25% of our population, and 100% of our future. There is every reason to do all we can to help our young people be prepared to lead the way into the future," said Mayor Doug Echols.
